Zetia (Generic)

Zetia (ezetimibe) is used either alone or with other drugs (e.g., HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors or "statins"), along with a low cholesterol/low fat diet, to help lower cholesterol in the blood. Reducing cholesterol helps prevent strokes and heart attacks. Ezetimibe works by reducing the amount of cholesterol your body absorbs from your diet. Zetia also marketed as: Ezedoc, Ezetrol, Ezetimibe.

Uses

Ezetimibe is a drug that is used for the treatment of elevated blood cholesterol. The most commonly used class of drugs for lowering cholesterol levels, the statins, act by preventing the production of cholesterol by the liver.

How to take

· Take ezetimibe by mouth with or without food.
· Taking ezetimibe at the same time each day will help you remember to take it.
· If you also take a bile acid sequestrant (e.g., cholestyramine, colesevelam, colestipol), do not take it within 4 hours before or 2 hours after taking Zetia . Check with your doctor if you have questions.
· Continue to use ezetimibe even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses.

Side effects

Ezetimibe is well-tolerated. The overall rate of side effects with ezetimibe in clinical studies were similar to that reported with placebo (an inactive sugar pill). Diarrhea, abdominal pain, back pain, joint pain, and sinusitis were the most commonly reported side effects, occurring in one in every 25 to 30 patients. Hypersensitivity reactions, including angioedema (swelling of the skin and underlying tissues of the head and neck that can be life threatening) and skin rash rarely occur. Nausea, pancreatitis, muscle damage (myopathy or rhabdomyolysis) and hepatitis have been reported in post-marketing studies.

Precaution

This medication should not be used along with a statin agent if you have certain medical conditions. Before using this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have active liver disease. Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of liver disease (moderate to severe), any allergies. This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is not known whether this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Drug interactions

Cholestyramine (Questran), colestipol (Colestid) and colesevelam (WelChol), bile acid-binding drugs that may be used to treat elevated levels of cholesterol, bind to ezetimibe and reduce its absorption from the intestine by about 50%. Therefore, ezetimibe should be taken at least two hours after or one hour before these drugs. Cyclosporine (Gengraf, Neoral) increases the levels of ezetimibe and could lead to greater side effects of ezetimibe

Missed dose

If you miss a dose, take as soon as remembered; do not take if it is almost time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.

Storage

Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (between 15 and 30 degrees C) away from moisture and sunlight. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep away from children and pets.
